Microsoft’s SQL Server 2008 has three enhancements that will change Field Service Software forever. These are 1) geography and geometry data types and close interaction with Microsoft Virtual Earth 2) user (not programmer) reporting and analytic capabilities and 3) greatly enhanced support for wireless mobile devices in the field. Field service SQL server 2008 allows work regions and travel that are no longer limited to antiquated area definitions like postal codes, so Field Service in countries like China becomes much more manageable. Forecasting and data mining analytics are now much easier to use. Finally, the off again / on again connectivity between the wireless mobile device and the server, and synchronization-based, and notification-based abilities are now handled by the Microsoft software, enabling dynamic field service dispatching to become much easier to implement.
